Its time to GLOBALIZE!
How to Integrate into any curriculum
Educational Standards provide the core of what students should learn throughout their school career. Some standards are rigid and inflexible, others can be personalized to best fit the needs of specific student populations. It is common for teachers to feel chained to their content standards, and often feel overwhelmed about adding anything to their already full curriculum. Nearly all standards have some room for globalization.By globalizing specific content area standards, educators in every discipline can seamlessly incorporate these important ideas into a wide variety of lessons they already teach.
Some Ohio Visual Arts Standards already reflect globalized thinking. The following expands art creation into the Take Action" competency.

Some standards throughout all content areas could be updated to reflect global learning.
Expand relevant vocabulary to analyze and interpret works of art depending on their appropriate cultural contexts
How can you globalize your standards?
Five Quick Ways to Globalize
What to Globalize?
-
Have monthly theme- great way to start conversations. Themes could be based upon a social, environmental, or global issue or a specific place!
-
Showcase current student’s cultures and cultural artifacts. Just remember, some students love to share, others may be hesitant.
-
Promote cultural events in the community. From clean-up days to cultural festivities to local live music, get students out into the community! Just make sure to put all celebrations in the appropriate context.
-
Bring in authentic artifacts for students to see and touch. Holding an object, instead of seeing it through a screen, is powerful.
-
Contact local embassies and consulates. These could send you information, speakers, artifacts and opportunities. Local universities may also serve this same role.
