Madrid's Street Art Center
Deep in the Lavapies barrio lies a huge city block of connected buildings. What once used to be a profitable tobacco factory is now a scene for collaborative and community based arts of all sorts. The bottom half of the walls are tagged with names and small characters, while the upper half is a showcase of murals in every style and theme. There are notices for workshops, music, and other grass-roots led activities on gates and signs inviting you to join. Welcome to la Tabacalera de Lavapies.
"We want people to reflect on the contemporary city and the kind of life we live through art."
The Madrid Street Art Project, is an initiative that aims to spread and support urban art through the Spanish capital. For several years they hosted festivals that would bring street artists from around the country and the world to create murals all around the outside walls of the old factory.
When we were in Madrid the major murals were still up from the last Muros Tabacalera, held in a pre-covid world in 2019. The theme that year was chance. See if you can understand the artist's theme in each of the images in the gallery below.
